Background and Overview
Education of breast surgeons may begin in the operating room, focusing on the “science” of treating breast cancer. However, learning about how to guide patients from diagnosis through recovery is truly the “art” of breast care. The Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) sanctioned breast fellowship courses to train young surgeons about the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, with their primary focus on the science. In addition to the treatment of the disease, the SSO now requires breast surgeons to learn about survivorship, prevention, and after cancer care.
Over the past nine years, Dr. William Scarlett and Dr. Beth DuPree have developed “The Breast Cancer Survivorship Experience” course. During this course, they have taught fellows the “art” of breast care for the patients. We are pleased to have Dr. William Scarlett and Dr. Beth DuPree as the co-facilitators again for the 2022 course.
The main objective of the course is to provide these young breast & surgical oncology and plastic surgery fellows with the educational resources to complement their surgical specialty education.
