I have been asked, "Why am I writing a book?" and "When do I find the time?" Great questions!

I started the book during a trip to the Greek Islands. I awoke from my sleep and took my travel journal into the tiny bathroom at two in the morning in our cabin on the Wind Spirit cruise ship. My husband and I were on a cruise of the Greek Islands with Brian Weiss and James Van Praagh. We were on “The Voyage of Enlightenment.”

That evening, a week before September 11, 2001, we had rescued two Afghani refuges from the Aegean Sea who would have died on their deflated raft had it not been for the chance meeting with our ship, which was sailing to Rhodes, Greece.

When I was awakened at two in the morning, I began to write in my journal about the shift in thinking that needed to occur in our society. We need to look at health care differently than we currently do. We need to regain focus on "healing" and shift away from "curing" as our ultimate goal. And so was born The Healing Consciousness.

Of course, I was too busy to even think about writing a book, given my practice, my husband, and my two small boys. However, it became very clear to me that, despite my hectic schedule and commitments, I had to relate the story about how I was awakened to the healer that resided within me, the healer that society and modern medicine had suppressed.

I have, over the years, shared with patients and friends many of the experiences that are detailed in the book. Writing the book seemed like the logical thing to do, so that I would be able to share my spiritual awakening with my friends, patients, colleagues, and anyone else who cared to listen.

When you awaken to your essence, then you can’t help but listen to the messages that you receive.

Frank Champine At the age of 59, Frank Champine, a recently retired secondary-school teacher found a mass in his breast that brought him to my practice. During our first encounter as doctor and patient, he was drawn to a spiritual painting behind my desk. He shared with me his interest and recent enrollment in a class on Chinese Brush Painting and Sitting Meditation. Just four weeks before we met, Frank had enrolled in the course with the Medical Mission Sisters in Fox Chase, PA. That day, I loaned a book to him that I had purchased from Dr. Pak Lee, the artist who created my painting. Subsequently, Frank was diagnosed with breast cancer. At a time in his life when he wanted to focus on his spiritual education and development, he was waylaid. He endured surgery, chemotherapy, and several complications from his treatment. More...
